The quick answer to this is no. Some may say, "I don't agree," or "that isn't true." Some may even say that "God punishes us like a parent would punish a child. So yes, God does punish His children."

The first thing we have to look at is what does the word "punishment" mean? Punishment is defined as an action done to make the offender repay the debt that is owed. One thing we must understand is that Jesus paid the price for the debt owed.

We see this statement in Colossians 2:14, "having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."

If we are children of God, that means we are no longer under punishment because if we were, then that means Jesus' blood wasn't enough for the debt of our wrongs. However, it is those who are not in Christ who get punished.

Now the question is, what if I do wrong? Well, you then ask for forgiveness; you are under the blood of Jesus and not God's punishment. We have to consider this though God is patient, merciful, and gracious to forgive us of our sins and for us to come to repentance, and instead of punishment, we can see God discipline His children instead to lead us to repentance. That is for those who have given their life to Christ and are born again.

The only times we would see God punish anyone would be people who are not His children and people who are wicked and evil. When it comes to His children, he does not punish them but rather disciplines them.

What is the difference between punishment and discipline?
Punishment is done with anger.
Discipline is done with love.

Punishment focuses on the past.
Discipline focuses on the future.

Punishment focuses on making that person suffer for what they did wrong.
Discipline is about teaching one how to make a better choice next time.

Now there are repercussions for those who do wrong that are children of God and are covered by the blood. This is what we call consequences.

Consequences focus on the present time.

Often, when we do things wrong there, there can be consequences behind it; it does not mean God is punishing a person, though. Rather, there are repercussions due to the wrong decisions one ends up experiencing due to the bad decision they decided to make.
